He's there not because he's changed any policies or restrained his tweets but because, due to the SOTU, the American people got to see the real Trump not the horned Trump monster that the #FakeNews media are constantly reporting on.
With the #FakeNews media saying that Trump is literally insane, that he refuses to compromise, that he's literally Hitler it's not surprising that swing voters, who assume that the #FakeNews media is at least somewhat honest, have a negative view of him.
But in the SOTU those people saw the real Trump unfiltered by the media lies. That's why Democrats urged their voters to not watch the SOTU; the only thing keeping Democrat voters from voting Republican are lies.
Trump called for compromise and he showed how his policies are designed to make life better for Americans. He mentioned what the #FakeNews media has been concealing; the economy is great especially for minorities. He said that we shouldn't kill born babies, the latest Democrat trend, and that we shouldn't hate Jews--the other latest Democrat trend. He came across as a responsible person who is driven by his desire to improve the lot of all Americans which is the antithesis of the lies that the Democrats propaganda arm, the #FakeNews media, are peddling.
