Jesus doesn't support modern welfare but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be charitable

In Thessalonians Paul says the following:

Brothers and sisters:
You know how one must imitate us.
For we did not act in a disorderly way among you,
nor did we eat food received free from anyone.
On the contrary, in toil and drudgery, night and day
we worked, so as not to burden any of you.
Not that we do not have the right.
Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you,
so that you might imitate us.
In fact, when we were with you,
we instructed you that if anyone was unwilling to work,
neither should that one eat.
We hear that some are conducting themselves among you in a
disorderly way,
by not keeping busy but minding the business of others.
Such people we instruct and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to work quietly
and to eat their own food. 2 Thes 3:7-12

"... if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat."

To modern leftists that's crazy talk. With Democrats calling for people who could work but who don't want to to have their "lifestyle" subsidized by your tax dollars the idea that Jesus wants a massive federal bureaucracy that will reward the lazy is assumed to be a fact.

The reality is that while Jesus calls us to care for those in need He is no fan of the lazy mooching off of the hard working as Paul makes clear.

Given that when Maine added a work/education requirement for single able bodied childless individuals who were receiving food stamps 80% dropped out of the program it's clear there are a lot of bums mooching off of hard working Americans.

Even Pope Francis isn't a fan of welfare:

Helping the poor financially must always be a provisional solution in the face of pressing needs. The broader objective should always be to allow them a dignified life through work.

So if we consider welfare to be helping those in need then Jesus, Pope Francis, and all Christians are for it but that's not what welfare is today.

We are all called on to help the poor and the best way to do that isn't by being taxed and a huge chunk of the money going to overpaid bureaucrats who use cookie cutter solutions that allow massive fraud but by giving to private charities that know the difference between someone in need and bums and which have little to any overhead expenses.

Because we're a wealthy country there should be a safety net program run by the government, at the lowest possible level, that keeps people from freezing to death in winter or starving.  If we did that we could save a huge amount of money and reduce tax rates so that people would have more money to give to private charities.

Right now 64% of the poor in America have satellite or cable TV.  Clearly they shouldn't be getting money from hard working Americans or at least they shouldn't be getting as much. Similarly instead of getting welfare they should be taking one of those jobs that illegal immigrants are taking.

But the left views welfare as a way to buy votes so they're all for taxing you to support bums.

Don't let people lie to you about what Jesus taught.  If there's someone in real need we have to use our own money to help them and we as a society should make sure that there's a safety net for those who need help. The handicapped, the elderly, the very young, those who are sick, and those who have just hit a rough patch despite working hard are all owed our help.  But the 80% of healthy single childless people who were stealing your money in Maine aren't owed anything.
