Based on his amazing ability to trust any scientist who says that unless we give the government power over everything we're all going to die he's concerned that old people won't agree to giving up their money and their freedoms based on some discredited political claims by scientists whose funding depends on spinning science.

Of course there is no right way to take someone gleeful that old people will die.
Of course given that leftists have been saying that for the good of the planet 90% of mankind--oops human kind-- must die off Ed appears to be what passes for a moderate on the left.
And then of course we've got the leftists who have openly wished that Justice Thomas die.
The reality is that just as Hitler wanted to kill off the Jews because he insanely believed them to be behind Germany's problems a disturbingly large number of Democrat politicians and elites, as opposed to people who vote Democrat, seem very comfortable with wishing people they disagree with die.
