Misleading coronavirus headline about gloves and shopping

Historically FoxNews has been more reliable than the rest of the media but an article today had a misleading headline.

The headline was:

Dr. Siegel: Why wearing gloves at grocery store is not necessarily a good idea

Here's what the good doctor actually said in response to a question about whether wearing gloves when shopping is necessary:

“Gloves accumulate germs, gloves accumulate viruses,” Siegel told “Fox & Friends," responding to a viewer's question about whether wearing gloves at the grocery store is necessary.

“You’re going to not even realize when you touch something then you have it on the gloves, then you transfer it to your face, then you can get infected," he explained.

Siegel said that gloves are not necessarily the right answer.

“You can’t change them enough to make a difference so I vote 'no' on that one. Yes, on the continued hand-washing.”

Now all of that makes perfect sense but since one can't wash one's hands while at the grocery store using gloves once for each trip--and taking them off before touching your car--, very possible given how few trips to the store we're making these days, is better than washing hands alone.

I think that Dr. Siegal was thinking of the scenario where people use the same gloves for multiple trips to the store and think that because of that they don't need to wash their hands.

To be fair the problem is partially due to Siegal not clarifying which scenario he was talking about so we shouldn't ding FoxNews too badly.  However it's important to use this example as a reason to actually read what professionals say and think about it not just read a headline and go act on it.
