They really think you're that stupid: Koala ecofreak edition

Koala bears have been declared to be "functionally extinct" whatever that means.

Now it makes sense to keep animals that are useful, and Koala's are entertaining if nothing else, from going extinct so getting a warning of the dire straights of the Koala bears would be a good thing.

If it wasn't totally bogus.

It turns out that there are 80,000 Koalas alive as we speak. Not 8, or 80 but 80,000.

No real scientist could have said this:

"Koala bears have been declared “functionally extinct,” the Australian Koala Foundation reports. The fluffy marsupial is down to just 80,000 wild species members, meaning there aren’t enough breeding adults left to support another generation of the pouched mammals."

80,000 Koala's are far more than the minimum needed to support another generation of Koalas.  Now that generation might be smaller than the current one and there might be a troubling trend but saying that such a large population is extinct is to lie to people.

It's unclear if anything needs to be done to help the Koala bear population because the article doesn't provide the sort of information necessary, such as the number of Koala's vs time, necessary to determine if Koalas are really facing a crisis.

What this does show is that the people who issued this statement really think you're as dumb as a pile of bricks.  After all if they thought you had a brain they wouldn't try and convince you that a population of 80,000 Koalas are "functionally extinct".

They could have said that the trends aren't looking good for Koalas but that wouldn't have gotten you to think that the correct response is panic and an immediate increase in government funding and regulation.

Instead they lied and thought they'd get away with it because they think you're an idiot.

Sadly this sort of ecolie causes people to not trust scientists when there are real eco issues that need to be addressed; like the fact that if we find real evidence of an upcoming climate catastrophe no one will believe it.
