DA says he won't prosecute protesters in Portland

If the Tea Party were protesting I'm sure that DA Mike Schmidt would throw the book at them but because it's a bunch of fascists who want to overthrow our country he's going to decline to prosecute the following crimes:
  • Interfering with a peace officer or parole and probation officer
  • Disorderly conduct in the second degree
  • Criminal trespass in the first and second degree
  • Escape in the third degree
  • Harassment
  • Riot (unless accompanied by a charge outside of this list)
If America is to be a nation of laws and not some third world banana republic where who you are matters more than what the law is we can't suspend laws just because we like the criminals.

The DA justified his refusal to do his job by saying:

"If we leverage the full force of the criminal justice system on individuals who are peacefully protesting and demanding to be heard, we will cause irreparable harm to them individually and to our society,"

It's unclear how interfering with the police, disorderly conduct, trespass, escape, harassment, and rioting are "peaceful" protesting.  Certainly you didn't see anyone charged with those crimes at the anti-shutdown protests which the #FakeNews media so viciously condemned.

The DA went on to say:

"As prosecutors, we acknowledge the depth of emotion that motivates these demonstrations and support those who are civically engaged through peaceful protesting. We will undermine public safety, not promote it, if we do not take action to bring about immediate change,"

That's his way of saying he likes what Antifa is doing so he's not going to make them follow the law.

It's obviously literally insane to say that prosecuting people for harassment or disorderly conduct is going to increase public safety.

The President of the Portland Police Association, Daryl Turner demanded that Schimdt focus on fighting crime rather than critiquing the police saying:

You ran on a platform of police accountability, which was a thinly veiled threat to indict police officers. What about indicting rioters who loot, burn, destroy, and assault? What about your ethical and moral duties to uphold the law and keep all our citizens safe? The people committing arson and assault are not peaceful protestors; they are criminals. Step up and do your job; hold the rioters accountable. If there is no consequence for crimes from the District Attorney's office, there is no reason for criminals to stop the chaos.

That raises a key point; if Antifa knows that it won't be prosecuted for the list of crimes above, which include rioting, they will have absolutely no fear of committing those crimes.

Which means by definition Schmidt is making Portland less safe.
