Reparations? For what? Making Blacks better off?

Slavery was a horrible thing and Republicans fought a war against Democrats to end it.

Fortunately for Blacks the Republicans won.

But now some radical Blacks are saying that we should pay Blacks reparations for something that was ended 155 years ago.

Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, has made a great point. If you want to compensate Blacks for what they lost by being enslaved compare the economic status of Blacks in America today with the economic status of Blacks in the African countries their distant ancestors came from.

The average income of Nigerians, who are almost all Black, is $1960 a year.

The average household income of Blacks in America is $41,361. Even if we assume that all Black families have two working adults that would still mean that Black Americans earn 10 times as much as they would have if their ancestors had stayed in Africa.

This doesn't mean that slavery was good but it does show that the people who really suffered, you know the actual slaves, are all long dead and their descendants are probably much better off for the suffering of their slave ancestors.

And of course not all Blacks have slave blood; Obama for example.  So how much slave blood does one need to get reparations?

I think we can all agree that the people who were actually enslaved were owed reparations not by the US but by the Democrats who bought and sold them.

When someone who has money assaults you they pay you not the government and the rich Democrats who fought the Civil War to keep slavery legal had money.

However none of the slaves are around anymore so the idea of paying "reparations" to their descendants who are doing better in America than they ever would have done in Africa is absurd.

But what about the racism in the US that lasted well into the 1960s?

First thing to note is that Blacks aren't the only ones who have been discriminated against.  My mother was denied a job in the 1930s because she was Catholic.  In Boston at the beginning of the 20th century businesses had signs showing they wanted to hire a worker that would say "Irish need not apply".

The second thing to note is that the segregation and racism was primarily in the Democrat run South. So once again if we're going to compensate Blacks it's the Democrats who founded the KKK and passed all the segregation laws who should pay not Americans in general.
