Ending mass incarceration means challenging a system that jails the poor to free the rich.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) November 2, 2019
Arresting people who can’t afford a $2.75 fare makes no one safer and destabilizes our community.
New Yorkers know that, they’re not having it, and they’re standing up for each other. https://t.co/asvidIe5zV
America spends more than a trillion dollars on helping the poor in America every year although to be fair a lot of that ends up in the pockets of the grossly overpaid government workers who manage the system. But real poverty is rare in America given that 64% of the "poor" in America have satellite or cable TV.
According to Bernie endorsing Ocasio-Cortez anyone who self identifies as poor can jump the turnstiles and not pay subway fares. Of course the elderly and even many middle age people can't physically do that so what she's really saying is that young healthy adults can ride for free on NY subways.
A question that leftists like Ocasio-Cortez never answer why mass incarceration is bad. Now if we're putting innocent people into jail that needs to be fixed but if we are simply punishing people who are preying on honest Americans and thereby keeping honest citizens safe it's unclear why the number of people in prison matters.
I can't imagine Ocasio-Cortez saying "no mas" to the number of Nazi's the US imprisoned after WWII after some number were incarcerated for example.
It may be that since the prisoners who are freed by radical leftists like Ocasio-Cortez will mostly prey on Blacks and Latinos she doesn't care since they won't prey on her or anyone she knows.
But whatever the case the protest that Ocasio-Cortez endorsed didn't just call for some people to be above the law it also condemned the police who put their lives on the line to protect New Yorkers every day.
The protesters chants included "How do you spell racist? N-Y-P-D", "Punch that cop!", and "Don't let those pigs touch us". Apparently that doesn't bother Ocasio-Cortez.
This is one more example of how Democrat politicians view themselves and their base as being above the law; free subway rides for me and not for thee.
Further if Ocasio-Cortez gets her way and subway fares become voluntary contributions the already financially struggling NYC metro system will either need to raise fares on honest people or be bailed out using tax dollars paid by honest people.
Essentially Ocasio-Cortez is calling for a new tax on honest people and a new welfare program for dishonest people.
