As part of his rationale he objected to the "disproportionately long sentencing enhancements" for some crimes including a 24 years to life one for using a firearm.
If you're familiar with the Democrat's approach to guns in California you're probably shaking your head right now.
Newsom and his cronies are doing everything possible, including trying to require guns to have non-existent safety technology in order to be sold, to keep honest citizens from having guns to defend themselves but he objects to attempts to reduce gun related murders by increasing the penalties for them.
Essentially Newsom is saying he doesn't really mind criminals using guns to murder people but he is furious about the idea that law abiding citizens can defend themselves.
This is part and parcel of the Democrat party and the left today. Recently the Washington Post dedicated its entire Sunday Magazine to extolling the virtues of drug dealers, money launderers, murders and other assorted felons.
For ages Democrats have whined about there being too many people in jail while not actually being able to show that anyone in prison is really innocent.
The reality is that Democrats like criminals and take their side over victims whenever it matters. An illegal immigrant "accidentally" shot a young American woman and the left flocked to his defense. None of them consoled the parents of the young woman.
