“There is something unique you have to agree that now the impeachment inquiry is underway, sparked by a complaint from someone within the intelligence community, it feeds the president’s concern, an often used term about a ‘deep state’ being there to take him out,” Margaret Brennan, the moderator for the event, asked McLaughlin.
“Thank God for the ‘deep state,’” replied the former spook, who served as acting director at the CIA in 2004.
This isn't some low level flunky; this is a senior leader like John Brennan.
He's glad that unelected intelligence officials are taking it upon themselves to remove a duly elected president because they don't like him.
It's clear that the faith conservatives have had in the IC is no longer merited. While the majority of the people in the IC are honest and don't misuse their power a sufficiently large fraction of the IC leadership has proven that they view themselves as our betters and that as a result they have veto power over who can be elected.
The challenge is going to be how to rein in the IC without reducing its effectiveness in collecting intelligence to thwart the plans of our external foes like Islamic radicals and the Chinese.
