The children were endangered because of Democrat policies. First Democrats want to give any illegal kid a free ride which means if they're caught sneaking in it's likely they will be able to stay. Second Democrats are working hard to convince everyone in Central America that if they get to the US they will be able to have welfare for life which incentives those people to pay smugglers to get them in.
Once people realize that simply sneaking over the border doesn't mean welfare for life, a good welcome, and an easy path to citizenship these sort of risky behaviors will be dramatically reduced.
