A CNN article from 2017 says:
"Trump said there were some “very bad people” on both sides, but that there was some who came out to protest the removal of Robert E. Lee’s statue who were “fine people.”
“You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down, to them, of a very, very important statue and a renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name,” Trump said."
This is interesting since recently CNN has gone back to the Big Lie that Trump was referring to the Nazi's/white nationalists when he said there were fine people on both sides. If you listened to the initial coverage it was clear that while many of the people at the protest were evil--white nationalists, Nazis, and Antifa--there were also good people on both sides. Contrary to what the #FakeNews people, you know the racist ones who cover up the mass shooting of Blacks in Democrat run cities, say one can oppose slavery and still admire General Lee--I don't admire him but I recognize that others can.
What Trump did was what the #FakeNews media should have done with the Covington boys and the Jussie Smollett case; express concern at first but wait till all the information is available before issuing pronouncements.
During and immediately after the event Trump basically condemned anyone who was violent but also said that not everyone there was violent; not all people supporting the statue were racists and not all the people wanting the statue removed were violent fascist members of Antifa.
After a few days Trump made more detailed statements in which he clearly and unequivocally condemned all of the perpetrators of violence and hate.
But because the #FakeNews media has lied so long and so often about this they've managed to convince honest Americans who would never lie that much that Trump did in fact say that Nazi's could be fine people.
