Essentially the liberal minority said there is no limit to the power of the judiciary; it's not constrained by the wording of the constitution or the wording of the law. If a judge says something that the President or Congress does is wrong then the judge has the final say. It doesn't matter if there is nothing in the law or the Constitution to support the judges reasoning; all that matters is that the judge has spoken.
Also today the Court ruled that a Jewish charity can't be forced to post a sign telling people how to get to a Nazi organization, a Black charity can't be forced to provide directions to the nearest KKK chapter, and that a Muslim charity can't be forced to provide directions to the nearest butcher who sells pork.
All of that flows from the Courts ruling that the insane government of California can't force pro-life pregnancy centers to post signs directing people to the nearest abortion mill. But once again the left wing minority on the court argued that the state does have the right to force people to advocate for things they believe go against their religions beliefs and that the 1st Amendment doesn't protect people from being forced by the government to say things that they don't believe in.
The reason this shows why you have to vote Republican is that without Trump as President and a Republican controlled Senate both of these decisions would have gone the other way.
If the left wing had picked a judge to replace Scalia the Court would have ruled that judges can overrule any action of the Congress and/or the President that they don't like even if the law and the Constitution says that the action is legal.
Similarly if we didn't have Trump and a Republican controlled Senate the Court would have ruled that Blacks would have to post signs directing people to the nearest KKK chapter.
So no matter how fed up you are with the Republicans in Congress not getting the job done remember that the alternative is the House impeaching Trump and basically stopping him from doing anything for the next 2 years and the Senate only approving activist judges who will act as petty dictators rather than honest arbiters of the law.
